ROAD RACES IN THE MONTH OF APRIL

Information about the races has been obtained from the Runners guide website and is up to date at the time of publication of the newsletter.

5 APRIL 2018

CENTRAL GAUTENG

ALL RACES
Sunday 8th April

Alan Robb 32 & 15km

The Alan Robb race is the traditional Germiston Callie race, now named after one of their famous runners (as one of the oldest Joburg clubs they have had a few Comrades legends run for them).  It is relatively quick although the runnersguide route description says the second half is tough which sees you running through the industrial areas close to Rand Airport.  Route goes through some of the older parts of Germiston for those that like Joburg history).  Online entries are closed but you can enter on the morning of the race.  Note the start time of 6:30 – most races will start at this time with sunrise being later.

Sunday 15th April

Jackie Gibson Marathon & Alan Ferguson Half Marathon

This race taking place in and around Kibler Park is renowned for having a tough route that goes over the Klipriviersberg ridge. Another one of Joburg’s oldest club Harriers have moved this race around over the last few years. The start is at the Kibler Park Rec centre again which would indicate a clockwise route. The flyer mentions that it is pre-entries only which have closed. It does appear that you can still enter on Webtickets if needed.

Sunday 22nd April

Birchwood Half Marathon & 10km

The Birchwood Half is probably Joburg’s quickest 21km, run around the Boksburg suburbs close to the Airport.  Normal problem for Championchip races though is that it is already sold out.

Friday 27th April

MiWayLife Cradle Humankind 32km, half marathon & 10km

Another race that is pre-entries only and by the time you are reading this, entries would have closed.  The route is a very scenic out and back (turn around the bin) for all distances.  The routes are quite lumpy as you go from valley to hill.  Generally an enjoyable race but the traffic can be a huge problem getting in do car pooling is suggested.

Sunday 29th April

Robor Scaffolding 50, Marathon, Half, 10 & 5km

The last marathon in Joburg before Comrades.  The Benoni Northerns route is pretty flat although the bits through Ebotse golf course always a challenge.  The most difficult aspect of this race is the fact that the split for the double lap (and triple lap for the 50km) is right at the finish – causing a lot of temptation to just stop instead of going out for another lap.  Pre-entries close on 22nd April but you can enter on the weekend of the race at the club.

GAUTENG NORTH

ALL RACES
Saturday 7th April

Ford 3-in-1

Information on this race is relatively scarce as it appears to be a newish race.  It starts from Ford’s sports fields in Silverton, hence the sponsorship.  You are able to enter on the morning of the race.

Sunday 8th April

Modern Athlete Irene Ultra Marathon

The Irene Ultra is designed to take advantage of an anomaly in the Comrades seeding brackets.  48km races have the same qualifying criteria as a 50km distance so you are therefore getting “2 free kms”.  The course is designed without any significant hills to ensure that runners can get their best possible time.  Finally as it is partnered by Championchip they provide mat-to-mat times to Comrades for seeding purposes.  Race is pre-entry only.

Saturday 21st April

PnP Sosh Morula Half Marathon & 10km

This race is run from Giant Stadium in Soshanguve.  Entries are available on the morning of the race.  Information is limited on the net so difficult to find a route description.

Saturday 28th April

Tshwane Half Marathon & 10km

The Tshwane half is one of those races not affiliated to any club but rather hosted by the regional body (City 2 City used to be organized by CGA and AGN, now CGA don’t organise any races).  It is the second one in the month starting in the industrial area of Silverton which is relatively flat.  Entries are available on the morning of the race.

Tuesday 1st May

MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon

The Wally is the last official Comrades qualifier and the last marathon prior to Comrades.  Many runners use this as their final tune up race (or desperate qualifier) and as such it has been recorded as South Africa’s third biggest race.  The race is pre-entry only which close on the 15th April.  Please note the new venue of the Centurion rugby club which should make access a little easier.

REST OF SOUTH AFRICA

ONLY BIG RACES

April sees the final marathons that can be used as Comrades qualifiers.  We have only focused on the big races which are predominantly marathon distance or further.

Saturday 7th April

Arthur Cresswell Memorial Ultra Marathon & Half

The Bergville to Ladysmith Ultra is one of the historic race dates on the calendar.  The 52km distance gives you slightly more qualifying time than the 50km races (Om Die Dam, Loskop & Benoni) so is a great one to improve seeding.  The point to point race starts in Bergville which is higher than Ladysmith so another net downhill race with the second half being predominantly downhill.  The ultra is pre-entry only which closed at the start of April.

Sunday 15th April

Durban City Marathon and Half

The Durban City Marathon is a favourite amongst some of the KZN runners due to it being almost dead flat.  For a hilly city they make sure that you don’t get anywhere close to the Berea ridge.  Race is pre-entry only although you can enter on race weekend at a premium, just not on the morning of the event.

Saturday 21st April

Forever Resorts Loskop Ultra Marathon

Loskop is these days one of the Big 4 Ultra marathons.  Run as a point to point from Middelburg to the Loskop Dam it is quick and a net downhill race.  Always a good race to use for seeding or qualifying due to the quick course.  The race is pre-entry only and this year Pirates have a bus taking a number of the runners through.

Saturday 21st April

Langebaan Country Estate Weskus Marathon, Half, 10 & Fun Run

The race is held within the West Coast National Park and the beauty of the race is that there are no cars on the route – runners have the whole roads to themselves.  The marathon is point to point.  Both marathon and half are pre-entries only with entries closing on 16 April 2018.

Saturday 28th April

Potato Pride Wilge Marathon, Half & 10km

The Potato Pride is one of the last marathons outside of Gauteng for those looking to qualify for Comrades (although same weekend as Benoni and Wally so only for those looking for something different).  The route does include quite a bit of offroad but as it is along the banks of the Wilge river it is flat and fast.  You can enter on the morning of the race.

PIRATES ROAD RUNNING

ROAD RACES IN THE MONTH OF MARCH

Information about the races has been obtained from the Runners guide website and is up to date at the time of publication of the newsletter.

2 MARCH 2018

CENTRAL GAUTENG

ALL RACES
Sunday 4th March

Hot Legs 32, 15 & 5km

This is a new race on the calendar run under the banner of Born 2 Run. It starts at St Stithians and the 32km is a loop around the far northern suburbs of Joburg. The area that it runs through is hilly and so it promises to be a relatively tough course. Online entries only.

Sunday 11th March

Pharmaton Edenvale Marathon

Rand Road Warriors have had a sponsor change so many people would be familiar with this race as the Sarens marathon over the last few years. Traditionally a very quick route through the suburbs of Edenvale, Edenglen and Sebenza. It is a Championchip race which would mean that it sells out very quickly however you are able to pick up late entries at the venue on the race weekend.

Sunday 18th March

K-Way Gallopers 15 & 5km Run/Walk

The Gallopers 15km has been described as the ideal route for a PB. There isn’t a huge amount of information currently online besides the fact that entries are on Championchip and the race takes place in Leondale in Germiston.

Sunday 25th March

Run Zone Joburg Challenge

Another new race on the calendar. This time it is the Run Zone one that is being held in Berario, just North of Pirates. There are distance options of 21km, 10km and 5km and entries are available on Entrytime. Late entries are also available at the venue. With it being a new race it is a bit difficult to assess the course – it does mention suburbs of Fairland, Weltevreden Park and Montgomery Park but with Montgomery Park being on the other side of Northcliff that would indicate that there could be at least one large hill?

Friday 30th March >> Sunday 1st April

Randburg Harriers Easter 100

Technically not a race but generally an event well supported by the Pirates runners not travelling to Cape Town to do 2 Oceans. The Easter 100 is exactly that, 100km over the Easter weekend with the distance being split up over 3 days. Runners don’t have to run each and every day and are able to pick their distances. Runners are also able to start their run at a time that suits them (within reason as there are dedicated water points along the route).

GAUTENG NORTH

ALL RACES
Saturday 3rd March

Medihelp Sunrise Monster and Baby Monster

The name of this race is most apt as the route is a proper monster taking into account some of the toughest hills in Pretoria. Follow the green monster footprints as you run up and over Klapperkop into Waterkloof. Entries are available on the morning of the race which starts at sunrise.

Saturday 10th March

Buco Bobbies 3-in-1

The Buco Bobbies race makes Saturday morning racers wonder what is going on in Pretoria. For the third week in a row they give you a route that takes you over a number of the Pretoria hills. It starts and finishes at Wonderboom Junction which is North of the Pretoria ridge, you will need to travel slightly earlier to take into account the additional distance. Entries are available at the start of the race.

Saturday 17th March

Budget Kolonnade 3-in-1

You have to ask what it is with Pretoria races and starting at shopping centres.. Another weekend and another shopping centre, this time the Kolonnade Shopping Centre. After a number of tough weekends sanity returns to Pretoria with a slightly easier course. As with most Pretoria races entries are available on the morning of the race.

Saturday 24th March

Denel Half Marathon & 10km

This race is run from the Denel Irene Campus and as such it runs through large parts of Irene and Centurion. The race’s biggest drawcard are its medals with the medals being made by Denel and representing their products (read weapons). All finishers receive silver medals. Online entries are on Entrytime and as with most GN races entries are available at the start.

REST OF SOUTH AFRICA

ONLY BIG RACES

March sees the continuation of big races. Plenty of marathons and thus we have focused only on the bigger marathons again.

Saturday 3rd March

Surrender Hill Marathon, Half and 10km

This is a fantastic race with it providing you a great excuse to have a weekend in Clarens. The marathon race is run from Clarens over Surrender Hill (hence the name) before turning around and coming back again. A very tough route but incredible scenery. Entries are obtainable in Clarens on the weekend.

Saturday 3rd March

Saturday 3rd March

We’ve included this race on the list because of the interesting nature of the course. You run through the big 5 Marakele game reserve. Numbers are always very limited so best to plan a year in advance for this one.

Saturday 3rd March

Uniwisp Fast 5-in-1 Race

For fans of Kaapsehoop this is one for you, as it can be viewed of the cousin of that race. The Fast 5-in-1 starts well above Nelspruit on the Sabie/Lydenberg Road and you bomb down over 42km to finish in the Mbombela stadium. Where it differs from Kaapsehoop is that there are no bumps at the end, fewer steep downhills but more consistent profile. Buses are available from the finish to take you to the start and entries are available before the race and on the Friday

Sunday 4th March

CapeGate Vaal Marathon

Maybe affected this year with the earlier timing of Easter (and thus earlier cutoff of qualifiers for Oceans) this still remains a race for those in Gauteng that wish to do a fast flat marathon. Some runners prefer flat races and swear by this one, others prefer a few downhills and avoid this one like the plague. It is run through Vereeniging and the marathon is a double lapper. Online entries have closed but you can get on the race weekend.

Saturday 10th March

PWC Kosmos 3-in-1

This Secunda race is one of the few remaining traditional 3-in-1 races. Like other races with the description they have 3 distances but the difference is that all 3 distances start at different times to allow the runners to run a 42, followed by a 21, followed by a 10km. The races are all around the Lake Umuzi area in Secunda and thus relatively flat. All the events that include the marathon are pre-entry only. For the other distances you will be able to enter on the day (seeing as those distances don’t start at the crack of dawn).

Saturday 17th March

Old Mutual Om Die Dam Ultra, Half Marathon & 10km

Om Die Dam is one of the big 4 Ultras of South Africa (probably sits in third behind Comrades and Oceans and just ahead of Loskop). 50km’s of toughness. This year sees a change in the route as they have reversed the direction to get a better resemblance to this year’s Comrades down run. It does mean that Sarkies is now fortunately towards the beginning of the race although does place some tough hills towards the end. It may also indicate that they will be switching direction each year if they wish to replicate the sensations of the Comrades routes (which do switch each year). The race is now Championchip and similar to all their other events sold out in record time. 10km entries are available on race weekend.

Saturday 31st March

Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon

South Africa’s second largest marathon and by far and away the biggest half marathon in the country. The race is so big that it warrants its own section in this month’s newsletter so refer to the body of the newsletter for more information.
