Dear Pirates Members and Friends

The end of the year is upon us and wow this year has flown but it has been a great year with the Club enjoying some fantastic times and I am sure many friendships were made, matches won and lost, marathons, half marathons and 10kms completed and of course many hours enjoying a refreshment afterwards with great friends.

Next year will be a fantastic year for the Club with us celebrating our 125th Birthday.  We are a club which is one in a million as there are very few clubs in SA  still in existence who offer all the sporting codes that Pirates offers.  Be proud of your Club and the fantastic heritage it has. We look forward to our members embracing this milestone and supporting all the events we have planned.  The first being the 25th January 2013.

I would also like to appeal to all our members to get hold of ex-Pirates members and let them know about our celebrations as we would like to see as many friends of the Club as possible throughout the year.

CLUBS CLOSING TIMES DURING CHRISTMAS

CLUB DRAW

Unlucky for Simon Baker, whose name came out first in the draw and Mnikelo Madala, whose name came out second in the draw and they were not here so they lost out on winning some money BUT lucky for Erica Kinnear who was at the Club and won R1 125.00 as her name came out third in the draw. Thanks for the support of the Club Draw the amount of R3 875.00 is up for grabs in the First Draw of the year.  The Draw will take place on Friday 1st February 2013.

SOME INTERESTING PIRATES HISTORY FACTS

Taken from the Book ‘Kimberley Pirates”

How did Pirates get it’s name?

“The Pirates Club was, in fact, one of Kimberley’s most successful charitable ventures.  It had been founded, almost accidently, in the early 1800’s by G.J.A. Danford, the ‘Pirate King’  Danford, an indefatigable organiser of charity concerts, is said to have thought up an idea of the Club after staging a special production of ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ (a play not operetta) with a group of youngsters.  So successful was this show that the funds raised from it had been used by Danford to establish a gymnasium for his ‘Pirate Children’  Later a Club House was built.”

Pirates Club Johannesburg is a branch of Kimberley Pirates as when Gold was discovered some of the Diamond miners moved from Kimberley to the Witwatersrand. Pirates Rugby has for many years played a rugby match against Wanderers and the trophy the boys played for was called the Danford Cup. One can only imagine that name came from the founder of the Club

JOZI MARKET

This Saturday is a special “Christmas Market” at the Jozi Market.  Come down and support the stall holders and find some wonderful Christmas Gifts and lovely snacks for Christmas. The Market opens at 08h30 and closes at 13h00. See you all there.

I would like to thank all the members for the fantastic support they have offered the Club during 2012. There is no Club without our wonderful, supportive, thirsty members. Wishing everyone a wonderful Festive Season and may 2013 be a year of many adventures and great times.
