Hello Pirates Friends

Well this past weekend was a great unexpected success for the Club.  Pirates hosted the Jozi Crafters Beer Fest on Saturday – this event proved to be very popular and the organisers had to turn many patrons away as they were full.  Luckily for Pirates those ‘extra’ people came to the Club.  The amount of people at Pirates was totally unexpected and the Club was crazy busy.  Firstly I would like to apologise to any member who was inconvenienced in anyway on the day.  The Club did their best to accommodate everyone.

Thank you to Dave Benn and the staff for stepping to the plate and just getting on with the job.  To special members Roger Burne who saw the place was hectic and got behind the bar and helped serve for a couple of hours. Paul Vlaming thanks so much for your help.  Paul drove all the way home to collect change for the Club as we were under pressure which is a terrible situation to be in.  Thank you guys for being pro-active and helping the Club when we needed you.  You have no idea how much we appreciate this kind of support. Many Bakos from the Kitchen – you were a star.  Mands also saw we were under pressure and got behind the bar and served drinks for hours for us.  Thanks Mands much appreciated.

The Club Draw was well attended and the money was not won so next month it goes up to R5000.00.  The draw will be held on Friday 29th June at 18h30. Names out the barrel this month were Barry Skjoldhammer R5 000.00, Peter Little R2 250.00 and Wayne Tucker R1 1250.00.  Bad luck guys make sure you never miss again.
It is also with great sadness that we say good bye to a true friend of Pirates, Pete Thorogood.  Pete passed away on Sunday after a long battle with cancer. His Memorial Service is taking place on Friday 2nd June at 11h00 at Trinity Methodist Church in Linden, followed by a Wake at Pirates.  Condolences and love to Mari and family.  May Pete Rest in PeaceGood luck to our comrades runners.
Good Luck to all the Pirates Comrades runners who are taking to the road on Sunday 3rd June.  They will be running from Pietermartizburg to Durban this year. To all the runners hope your day turns out as planned and enjoy yourselves out there.  You are all amazing and we look forward to seeing you on TV Here is the list of runners from Pirates who are running this gruelling event.

UPDATE ON THE ELECTRICITY PROBLEM AT THE CLUB

I am sure many members are aware that the Club has been experiencing some electrical problems with black outs of certain areas.  I thought I would let you know what the problem is. The club has 3-phase electricity and the red phase keeps tripping in the City Power sub station.  We are not sure why so: Colin Barry has kindly loaned us a machine to test the loading of the phases to make sure we are not over loading the red phase therefore causing it to trip. Our electrician has been with some kind of instrument and checked the cables for faults – we cannot seem to find any. The office as reported a possible fault with the City Power breaker – maintenance calls to City Power take 7 to 14 days to be sorted out – so we await their call out. This is proving to be a process of elimination and we will get to the problem eventually.  I would like to apologise if members have been inconvenienced in any way. We are pro-actively trying to sort out the problem

HOCKEY FUNDRAISER – IT NEEDS THE CLUBS SUPPORT

The Hockey Section is holding a Fundraising event at the Barnyard Theatre on Friday 29th June. The show that we will be seeing is Moonshadows which is Music from Cat Stevens, Simon & Garfunkel, Johnny Cash, The Eagles, Shania Twain, Fleetwood Mac & more. The Hockey Section needs your support on this event. The cost is R150.00 per person and you bring your own food.  These are fantastically fun evenings.

Please contact Anthony Allen to find out more and to book your table. Anthony’s cell number is 082 906 3883

PLEASE BE VIGILANT AT YOUR CLUB

Unfortunately the Club is under constant threat of petty crime and car break-ins.  The office badgers ADT to do their job properly all the time. I would like to appeal to all members to be vigilant and to report any suspicious people to the barmen or ADT so that we can make their lives very unpleasant at Pirates that they do not want to come back. Do NOT leave your bags unattended at the fields, around the Club House or in the change rooms.  I realise and am very sensitive to the fact that at your Club you should not have to be so careful but unfortunately our location does not help our cause and we are constantly under threat.
