This is an initiative of Pirates Rugby Club with the objective to grow Pirates Rugby’s U19 and U21 Squads. It also gives the school boys the opportunity to play rugby at a higher level and to possibly be recognised as rugby players. We would also like to assure learners that Club Rugby is still strong irrespective of the interest an emphasis being placed on Varsity Cup Rugby.
Pirates Rugby invited old traditional schools and new schools in the feeder area to Pirates namely: Northcliff High School, Heronbrige College, Maragon College, Del la Salle and Fourways High School.
The Challenge was played on a Round Robin basis at their respective schools during their regular school fixtures. This gave the smaller schools an opportunity to play for something besides their normal friendlies at school.
The Pirates School Challenge is culminating with Finals being played at Pirates on the 1st and 8th June respectively.
A Pirates Invitational side will be selected from the Challenge to play against a Lions Presidential Side, a Roodepoort Invitational side and one other. We are hoping that these games will be played at Ellis Park Stadium. This is still to be confirmed.
The Finals will be played at Pirates on Saturday 8th June.
Here are the fixtures for Saturday 8th June

We were hoping to find a sponsor for this event for the first year but unfortunately this did not happen. Going on the success of this Challenge we are hoping to find a sponsor for 2014.
