CLUB DRAW

The next club draw takes place tomorrow evening – Friday, 28th August and there is R5100.00 to be won.

Remember you have to be there to win.

We will start as soon as the announcement of the Springbok Rugby World Cup has concluded.

SPRINGBOK RUGBY WORLD CUP SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT

The Springbok squad for this year’s Rugby World Cup will be named at a hotel in Durban on Friday (August 28) at 18:00.

The squad for the showpiece event in England and Wales will consist of 31 players.

The Springboks are in Pool B along with Japan, Samoa, Scotland and the USA. They start their campaign against the Brave Blossoms in Brighton on September 19.

Should South Africa win Pool B, they will face the runner-up of Pool A, which could possibly be Australia, England or Wales.

If the Boks reach the semi-finals, the All Blacks would in all likelihood be their opponents.

Pirates will be screening this live in our main bar before the club draw.

PIRATES RUGBY

Pirates stayed in front of the chasing pack when they narrowly beat Raiders 27-23 at Longdale last Saturday and it seems that their derby against Wanderers could decide the top open club in the league.

As the score suggests it was a close game which was determined by a kick or two with both sides struggling in this department.

Both Pirates and Raiders scored four tries to record a bonus point in a game in which Duncan Delport again stood out head and shoulders, particularly in defence.

Pirates build up an early 15-0 cushion before Raiders caught up and coach Brad Wilkin feels that his forwards got the ascendancy as the match progressed.

With former Raiders loosie Ben Sekgobela at lock Pirates enjoyed their first 100 percent lineout success of the season but the scrums were more even.

The Rats had a golden 20 minutes after the break and Sheldon Williamson made an impact from the bench and set up winger Jama Ntengo’s try.

The Raiders back three were however threatening throughout the game and Tshepo Mooki became the top try-scorer in the league with another brace.

Scorers:

Pirates: Tries: Dave Turnbull, Dudley Stead, Jama Ntengo, Martin Scheepers. Conversions: Hanco Deale (2). Strafdoel: Deale.

Raiders: Tries: Tshepo Mooki (2), Gardener Nechironga, Dewald van Deventer. Penalty: Arno Coetzee.

Pirates take on PUKKE this Friday  for a semi final spot. We take on PUKKE this Friday night to secure that spot.

PIRATES DEVELOPMENT PLANS

You will be aware of the Pirates Development Plan which was implemented last year.

An update on the progress of the Plans approved by the Club Council to date:

  • New POS system installed and paid up member pricing benefits implemented
  • Interior revamp in process with the increase of serving area to meet growing demand, in process.  The bar counter moves across a reasonably ‘dead’ area of the lounge to give staff more work and service area, plus add the opportunity to serve members and guests from outside as well.  There will be more work done in this project, including extending the deck in due course as funds allow (or sponsors step up to the Rats plate!).
  • Security upgrade with new high tech mesh security fencing to be installed this year (a formal announcement to follow acknowledging the great input from various members and the supplier/installer).
  • Improvement of the parking lot to be undertaken shortly (again a formal announcement of acknowledgement to follow)
  • Hockey Astro upgrade in process…. hopefully some exciting news still this year (the largest project by far as the cost is in excess of R5m)
  • Upgrade of catering facilities and services in discussion process… watch this space

WE NEED YOUR HELP:

We need YOU to volunteer to be part of making one of the approved Plans come to fruition…..

•New Hockey Astro
•Security Fencing and Entrance
•Tarring of Parking Lot
•Improvement of Club Interiors
•Kids Play Areas and Care
•More…. Contact the Office and please VOLUNTEER

FROM THE OFFICE

LADIES DAY LUNCH
The Club would like to thank everyone who supported our lunch on Saturday.  It was a massive success and much fun was had by all the Ladies.

Our Guest Speaker Mandy Ramsden was terrific and kept the ladies quiet for over an hour which is no mean feat!

We raised money for Pirates and for the Guild Cottage which was fantastic and this is all due to the generosity of all our guests.

Thank you so much to Jeanne and Cheryl Van Kerckhoven for all the hard work on the décor, the Main Bar was transformed.   To all the other ladies, Hayley, Pippa, Glynis Mauldon and Nadine Robertson thank you so much  for all their hard work in making it such a success.  You ladies ROCK and the Club would not survive without this wonderful volunteer work.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again next year – watch the space for something fantastic once again!!!

A MESSAGE FROM NON

I am sure many of you have seen the changes to bar – these are looking great and will make a huge difference to serving behind the bar and avoiding our guests having to wait too long for drinks when the Club is very busy, like the weekend when the Rugby Boys take on Wanderers.

Change is always good and the Main Bar is really looking fantastic now – thanks very much to Clem Jenje who did all the hard work for us in 3 days.

Please can I encourage our members to join our RWC Superbru – this is such fun , you get a chance to win money and so does the Club make some money so it is a win all round and you have fun with it.  Please click on the link and sign uphttp://www.superbru.com/club/piratessportsclub

See you all this weekend

STAFF MEMBER OF THE WEEK
We’d like to introduce you to one of staff members – Elizabeth.

Elizabeth is one of the hardest working cleaning ladies. She does a stellar job around Pirates.

Elizabeth started working at Pirates in the gym last year March and then from this year February, Non moved her up to the main club. She said she is eternally grateful for her job and loves Non & Trishy for helping her get this job.

Elizabeth is married as has 3 kids aged 6, 14 & 23.

For fun she goes to church which she loves with all her heart.

Please say hi to her the next time you see her.
