Full members of Pirates Club do not pay any additional subs to join the running section or for their CGA licences. For 2017 the club membership fee is R1720. Discounts apply for under 21s, over 60s and married couples.
We have an active road running section as well as road cycling and mountain biking so when you join the running club you are welcome to cycle with our team as well.
We run Time Trial every Tues evening at 5:45pm sharp from the Bowling Club car park (across the road from the main Pirates club car park in Greenside). The time trial has an 8km and 5km route. Generally the runners run the 8km and walkers walk / beginner runners run the 5km. When you arrive for the first time, let the person in charge know that you don’t know the route and they will find someone for you to run with or follow. The time trial is an excellent discipline every week and this is where you realise that you are improving your time. Afterwards, you are welcome to use the showers and join us for a drink in the bar – it’s a sociable time and you can get to know everyone.
Thursday evenings there are usually a team of runners who go out at 5:45pm and they do anything from 10-21km’s. This becomes more formal from end January when Comrades training begins in earnest. You are welcome to join them and go out for a shorter run and turn back when you need to. We recommend that you arrange/coordinate with someone to turn back with you.
Sunday mornings 7am we have a club run from the main Pirates car park – we all head out together and after approx 2km’s the group often splits into a longer (often faster) group and a shorter (slightly slower) group. The distances vary but are never shorter than 10km’s. Closer to Comrades, the longer (faster) group usually runs a 21km route every week.
Once a month we choose a race and a whole bunch of us head off to run the race and we arrange a skottel breakfast afterwards – these will be announced at time trial or via the weekly newsletter.
We have Pirates kit available in the Pirates shop in the main club – shorts and a shirt in club colours (navy and red).
