CLUB DRAW

The club draw takes place next week Friday the 31st of July. The pot is sitting at R4600. Well Done to Shirley Allsworth who won at the last club draw. Remember your subs need to be paid up and you have to be there to win.

PIRATES RUGBY

Pirates pipped Raiders 30-28 in a tense Pirates Grand Challenge fixture at Longdale on last Saturday to lead the Open Club pack in the race to qualify for the Community Cup.
Pirates’ bonus point victory saw them overtake Raiders, Wanderers and Roodepoort in a very close race and the Top 6 round is bound to be a thriller.
Pirates are on 31 points on the log, followed by Roodepoort and Wanderers on 29 and Raiders, who could only manage a single bonus point, on 27.
Pirates coach Brad Wilkin was thrilled with the victory but he was the first one to admit that his team didn’t play to its potential.
It was only later in the game that he changed his front-row when he introduced Bradley van Niekerk and Cobus van der Westhuizen that they got the upper hand in the scrums.
Captain Martin Scheepers and his fellow loose-forwards, Dudley Stead and Chris Newman combined well but the star of the show was Raiders flanker Thabo Mabuza,
Lion’s fullback Kobus de Kock was Pirates’ Man of the Match and he came through for the Rats when they needed it most.
Wilkin also praised flyhalf Shaun Davids for his effort but admitted that his opponent Arno Coetzee also had a fine game.
“They made strange changes during the match which put them under pressure,” said Wilkin.
Scorers:
Pirates: Tries: Duncan Delport (2), Hanno Zeeman, Dave Turnbull. Conversions: Kobus de Kock (2). Penalties: De Kock (2).
Pirates have a bye this weekend. They take on UJ at home on the 1st of August. Come down and support the boys.

A Club like Pirates is so strong because of our wonderful members and once again we need to thank our members for supporting the Club

A very big thanks to Mike Schwartz from Rustic Timber for re-doing the steps from the top of the car park to the fields – these steps were such a danger and they have now been re-done and look terrific. Thanks so much Mike.

I am sure many of you have noticed the new table top on the high tables in the bar. Thanks so much to Ian Benson for arranging to have the wooden tops replaced on our existing cocktail tables. They really look terrific. Ian, thank you for your interest and support.
