Sports at Pirates

Cricket

Despite being a fully amateur club, Pirates has and still attracts big name cricketers to don the Skull and Crossbones. Over the years, we have been represented by internationals such as Steven Jack, Clive Eksteen, Mark Rushmere, Sylvester Clarke (West Indies), Grant Elliott (New Zealand) and Matthew Hoggard (England) among others. Most recently, Keaton Jennings called Pirates home away from home in his off seasons from the English domestic and international season whilst Ryan Cartwright was a key member in Pirates promotion back into Pem A.

Hockey

Over the last few years Pirates hockey has grown in strength and in numbers, boasting 4 ladies sides and 5 men's sides competing in their various SGHA leagues. Our men's teams are in the Men’s Premier, 1st, 2nd & 3rd leagues. While our Ladies sides compete in the Promotion, 1st, 2nd & 3rd leagues. Our coaching staff come with years of experience as well as plenty good vibes! Pirates Hockey is known for being a social club off the field and we are still very proud of that! If you are looking for a hockey club that offers tough competition as well as an amazing social atmosphere, look no further!

Lawn Bowling

We are a vibrant club enjoying both social and competitive bowls. As typical Pirates we are highly regarded for our friendliness and sporting approach to the way we play, although we remain competitive at all times. We pride ourselves on balancing the traditions of the game with the need for the game to change and attract newer, younger bowlers. We are a Member-Club of the Johannesburg Bowls Association (JBA) and play League on the weekends. Tabs are Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings. We have also started Social Bowls on Saturday mornings for those keen to play and have fun.

Road Running

Pirates Road Running welcomes all runners and athletes. Founded in 1977 as a section of Pirates Club we are a well-established and social club of runners of all abilities. Pirates Road Running Section boasts a proud Comrades Marathon tradition and a wealth of running experience available to any runner looking to reach their goal; be it their first half marathon, marathon or ultra; with weekly time trials and Club Runs. We also count an active walkers group, cyclists and avid trail runners among our members. Pirates hosts two races and three event club runs on the annual running calendar

Rugby

A member of the top flight for many years, Pirates has developed the reputation of ‘Giant Killers’. The Club regularly competes with and beats the top Varsity Cup teams of UJ and Pukke. Over the years Pirates has established an illustrious sporting record and has won a number of both the national and local rugby championships. The Club caters for all players from U19 through to Old Boys who are referred to as the Madalas. Pirates fields 3x Senior teams, 1x U21 team and 1x U19 team in the League. Practices take place at the Club on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 18h00. Everyone is welcome!

Football

We have a range of football options available at Pirates from toddlers to adults. Our soccer offering is spearheaded by affiliate and home teams for juniors and ladies, Emmarentia Sporting Football Club. We have two 5-a-side astro courts managed by Urban Sports for social 5-a-side games and kids parties. Pirates also hosts Men's Social teams, The Remains of Africa and The Rotten's for occasional weekend games. Our primary objective as the Soccer Section at Pirates is to provide an avenue for all interested junior players to play football in a safe, healthy and largely competitive-free environment. In addition, we hope to encourage all kids, boys and girls to participate in the great game of football.

Squash

Pirates Club has two squash courts, newly repainted and with their own change rooms. The Squash Courts now also boasts a card-controlled access and booking system for the convenience of members. Non-members are welcome to use the courts anytime, except between 16h30 and 20h00, for only R100 for 45 minutes. Access cards are located at the Main Club bar.

Tennis

Pirates Club boasts six beautiful tennis courts, four of which have floodlights. We offer social tennis as well as competitive tennis (regular league fixtures) throughout the year. Our resident coaches offer both private and group coaching with regular tennis clinics for both young and old. The East Campus Clubhouse, which overlooks all the courts, is a great social venue for both members and guests to enjoy on any given day. In 2023 the East Campus Clubhouse bar received a much needed make over with thanks to Devils Peak and an inverter was installed to keep the bar open during loadshedding hours!
